Skills Audits

Skills Audits: what will they provide to my organisation?

A cost effective and strategic overview of the human resource capability within your organisation. This will provide clarity on where to target further investment for development. More specifically you will gain:

  • Clarity on the strengths and weaknesses of the most important asset in your organisation, - your people.
  • Identification of high level development needs of personnel in order to accommodate future demands of the business.
  • Identification of immediate opportunities to enhance human resource management processes.
  • Refinement of an existing, or development of an interim competency framework.
  • An insight into the medium and longer term opportunities to new business opportunities based on unused skills within your workforce.
  • Benchmarking of personnel against global standards.

Many of our clients who receive a competency audit, follow up with a development centre for a more targeted selection of managers. This illustrates the real value of a skills audit: an initial moderate investment facilitates the effectiveness of more targeted investment at a later date.

How does a skills audit work?

It is important to distinguish between the term appraisal and assessment. Appraisal is a more subjective, high level review process. Assessment is a more objective, detailed evaluation process. For speed and cost considerations, a skills audit usually employs an appraisal process. In practice this will mean the use of questionnaires, combined with interviews of a sample of personnel from different parts of the company. Your own, or a suitable alternative competency framework will be used for benchmarking purposes. Where necessary, a more thorough assessment of key personal can be made using occupational testing.
